Social psychologists have studied this human mental tendency, and in the mid-1970s Professor Lee Ross called it the “fundamental attribution error.” The idea is that when we have limited information about what is going on with another person, when we observe his or her behavior we are likely to interpret it as part of that person’s nature or disposition, instead of to any situational factors. Our judgment will likely be about the other person’s character or basic disposition, and not about some difficulty that the person might be having at the moment…such as the possibility that he or she was rushing to the hospital because of a dying family member or best friend.
